Cost of Catalytic Converter
The main cost of catalytic converters comes from the catalysts used to convert the exhaust into a more environmentally friendly by-product. Catalytic converters use precious metals to initiate chemical reactions that convert harmful substances like, carbon monoxide hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide, into less harmful substances like carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water. The precious metals used in these reactions are platinum, palladium and rhodium, and the increasing prices of these commodities factor greatest into the cost of catalytic converters. Although all cat converters use the same precious metals the price of catalytic converters ranges from car to car based on make, model and engine size.
